Troopers Review: Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360)

If you haven't heard of Modern Warfare from Infinity Ward (the developer behind the original Call of Duty) then you must be living under a rock somewhere, because Modern Warfare 2 is the biggest entertainment lauch in history, selling 4.7 million copies in the first 24 hours. The first Modern Warfare game (also by Infinity Ward) was good, and Modern Warfare 2 brings us more of the same. This may seem like a bad thing, but you know what they say: if it aint broke, don't fix it.

This game is the standard by which most other FPS games try to live up to. The gameplay is like most standard FPS's. The single-player campaign continues 4 years after the events of the first Modern Warfare, and is more action-packed. If you like Michael Bay's recent action-packed films, then you are going to love the single player and if you think there is such a thing as too much action, then you are going to get fustrated after a few levels. There are also more plot twists than a M.Night film, to a point where they becoming more annoying and less surprising. The problem with the Modern Warfare campaign was that it had infinitely spawning enemies, which made certain points hard to get through, especially on veteran difficulty. This has been fixed in Modern Warfare 2, so the campaign should be a breeze to get through for those achievement hunters out there.

Now Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer is where the game really shines and is why is has remained the most played game on xbox live to date since its release. As well as the online multiplayer which made Modern Warfare so successful, they have also introduced Spec-Ops, which is a set of missions which can be completed either by yourself or two player split-screen or online. The missions get progressively harder as you move down the list, and the missions vary just enough to keep you entertained. It is much easier to get through the missions with two players, but it myself and my friend what seemed like a thousand tries to complete a mission in the last set. Missions vary from just eliminiating a certain number of hostiles to one player escorting the other in an AC-130 (note there are a couple of missions where two players are REQUIRED).

The online multiplayer is much the same as Modern Warfare, except for a few changes. The perks seemed to have been balanced out, so enemy players who are a higher rank don't have that much of an advantage. "Deathsteaks" have also been introduced, which are the polar opposites of killstreaks. Martydom has been added to this category rather than being a standard perk. Kill streaks have also been ramped up, to a AC-130 gunship at 11 kills, to a tactical nuke at 25 kills which will end the game in a certain amount of time.

Scores

Gameplay:
7.0 The gameplay offers no new innovations, but the mulitplayer is always enjoyable.

Replability:
8.5 You wont want to replay the campaign once you complete it on veteran, but Spec-Ops and the multiplayer will keep you coming back for more.
