This was a download-able game I had relatively unheard of. I watched a couple of preview videos once I heard the name and became intrigued. At 1200 MS points, it will not keep you entertained for a long time, but you will get a decent 4-6 hours of playtime which isn't bad for a download-able game without any sort of multiplayer except for local co-op. Deathspank is a action-RPG in vain of Diablo and other click n' slash RPG's of recent times, and it takes no shame from admitting that it is drawing from these games. It is created by the same guy who did the original Monkey Island games back in the 90's so of course there is also plenty of humour in this game also. Players take on the role of Deathspank, a "hero to the downtrodden" who is on a quest to retrieve something cleverly named "The Artifact". Deathspank (the game) takes the route of traditional RPG's in the form of doing various quests. There are the main story quests and quite a large amount of side quests (as there is an achievement for completing 50 side quests and that is not all of them). There is an inventory and loot system similar to Diablo.
The dialog is quite good, and full of humour and references to pop culture and other RPG's. The graphics are not spectacular but the art design and mixture of 2D and 3D environments are enjoyable. Their are various types of enemies, some of which will kill you very easily. Some of the characters are memorable while others are not. Overall if you enjoy Diablo-style games then you will enjoy this, although the playtime may not sway some of you. The co-op is disappointing however, as you can play as another character aswell as Deathspank, but the two players share the same health bar, and while the support character levels up with Deathspank, his inventory and abilities are not customizable.
Scores:
Gameplay: 7/10 In the same vein as other action-RPG's
Sound: 8/10 The voice acting is good, and the soundtrack is enjoyable.
Graphics: 6/10 Not state of the art but art design is new and exciting.
Replayability 5/10 You may want to play through the game once or twice.
Overall Score: 7.5/10
